Have surgery scheduled with us? (yay)
Here is a checklist
Pre-op Doctor Visit
Every patient getting anesthetic for surgery requires a trip to their primary doctor before surgery to have a pre-op check. This is to make sure there are no health issues that may prevent us safely doing surgery. It usually involves just blood tests for otherwise healthy patients under 40 and chest x-ray and EKG and possibly mammogram over 40.
Also, as a precaution this may involve an examination of the breasts or testicles if we are operating on those areas.
If you need an order to bring to your Primary Care Provider to to an Urgent Care for clearance please reach out to Neasa or Daryl at 3052049598 (call or text) or email clinical@gallagherplasticsurgery.com.
Pills
Stopping meds?
Here are some of the more common meds that may need to be stopped before surgery- this is NOT an exhaustive list any confusion reach out.
Hormones
Estradiol/ Progestins – usually stopped 2 weeks before for major surgery such as vaginoplasty
Testosterone – Dr. Gallagher usually does not require you to stop this.
Blood thinners
Aspirin – 10 days
Plavix, Coumadin, Xarelto – reach out to office to clarify
Stimulants
Adderall, Ritalin, Vivance, – stop 1 week
Marijuana – 1 week before surgery (remember no smoking ANYTHING or nicotine 6 weeks before 6 weeks after)
Medications for auto-immune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis – some of these have powerful negative effects on wound healing and may need to be held way far in advance.
Person
You need a trustworthy adult to pick you up and stay with you for 24 hrs after surgery. No worries if you don’t have you can hire a sitter. This needs to be arranged in advance.
Place
See out of town section
We strongly advise staying at least 24 hrs in the immediate area after all surgeries – this way we can help out with any problems. Also pay attention to the address for surgery – we do not do most surgeries at Dr Gallagher’s office.
PCR
Most patients will need to have a negative COVID 19 Nasal PCR test done no more than 1 week before surgery. If you have received 2 doses of the vaccine more than 3 weeks ago that counts. If you are a minor your accompanying parent requires the same to enter the facility.
Payment
If you still have payments to make, they are due 2 weeks before surgery.
Planning
You will get a phone call the evening before surgery confirming arrival time and pre-op instructions.
Packing
The sun is strong here in Miami year-round – bring sunscreen, shades, cap and summer clothing!
We will provide prescriptions for post-op meds but it’s good to have the following with you. Advil and tums and any other meds you may take from time to time such as laxatives or allergy meds.
Top surgery – Large bandaids, antibiotic ointment, gauze.
