Introduction to Breast Reduction

Large breasts can cause a host of problems for our patients, such as neck, back, and shoulder pain. In addition, finding clothes that fit well is often problematic (forget about button-down shirts), and rashes under the inframammary fold can be annoying. Heavy, large breasts usually sag sooner or later, and many of our patients abhor their shape as well as their size because of the frequent lateral overhang of fat. Breast reduction decreases the size of the breasts, but in addition, Dr. Sidhbh Gallagher in Miami, FL, always lifts and shapes the breasts as part of the procedure. Dr Gallagher is known for her custom results. She can offer a range of incision options and techniques to help patients achieve the exact size they requested. Many patients will come to us having been told elsewhere that they can only be reduced to a certain cup size. What Is Breast Reduction?

Typically, patients with larger breasts have tried various other options, such as weight loss, before seeking surgery. Unfortunately, genetics are usually at play, and a patient with “macromastia” (the medical term for large breasts) will rarely be able to reduce the breasts significantly or find ways of easing the back pain short of the reduction surgery.

Breast reduction restores balance and proportion to the figure, helping patients reclaim their confidence and enjoy a broader range of clothing choices. Dr. Gallagher provides Miami-area women with the naturally elegant and beautiful results they have always envisioned.

Sarahplasty

Patients travel from around the world to seek out Dr.Gallagher’s unique Sarahplasty technique. This is named after a very articulate patient from many years back who wanted something different from the traditional techniques offered to women.

Traditionally, a breast reduction is done by keeping the nipple attached via a pedicle. This pedicle takes up space, so it limits how small we can go with the reduction.

Sarahplasty allows the patient to go from any cup size to an A or lower, as the nipple is removed and regrafted into position.

Some patients do not wish to have the traditional anchor shape, which essentially creates cones on the chest to make the breasts stick out more. Instead, they opt for a more rounded mound-like shape with minimal fold under the breast. This allows us to skip the vertical scar, and wearing a bra after surgery becomes optional.

What’s the first step?

Your Breast Reduction Journey with Dr. Gallagher

At your first visit, Dr. Gallagher will talk to you about your general health and wellness before doing a very important exam of the breasts (safety is paramount!). Dr. Gallagher will then plan the breast size with you and discuss which incisions will be needed to reduce the size and lift the breasts. She will also go over the risks, downtime, costs, and other details related to the surgery.

After Dr. Gallagher approves your candidacy, we will schedule your surgery and provide you with detailed preparation instructions. You may be asked to discontinue taking certain medications and supplements that might increase surgical risks. If you smoke, you will need to quit at least 4-6 weeks prior to surgery.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Reduction Surgery

This surgery is done under general anesthesia, with some patients choosing to stay overnight. Once you are at rest, the doctor will create your incisions according to your unique treatment plan. Common incision placements include encircling the areola, traveling vertically down from the areola to the inframammary fold, or encircling the areola, traveling down from the areola, and then stretching horizontally along the breast crease. Incision placement will depend on the degree of breast enlargement.

The traditional anchor shape is by no means the patient’s only option. Also, with the free nipple technique, the patient can go down to any size they choose. Through your incisions, Dr. Gallagher will remove excess skin, fat, and tissue, creating a more balanced and symmetrical breast shape. Once the surgery is complete, your incisions will be closed and you will be placed in our recovery area until it is safe for you to go home.

Breast Reduction Recovery

Your Guide to Post-Breast Reduction Care

Breast reduction recovery is typically seamless, provided you follow Dr. Gallagher’s instructions carefully and set aside sufficient time to rest and recuperate. Swelling, bruising, and chest soreness are common side effects, but Dr. Gallagher will provide prescription pain medications to help alleviate any discomfort as you heal. You will be fitted with a compression garment, which helps to minimize swelling and protect your sculpted breasts during recovery.

No stitches need to be removed, and a patient can shower in about 2 days. Typically, patients return to work about two weeks after surgery. Dr. Gallagher never uses drains for this procedure. While you can start light walking right after surgery, avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for about 4-6 weeks.

    Dr. Gallagher and her team are the absolute best! She completed my brachioplasty on Tuesday and when I saw the initial results at my post op appointment two days later I literally had tears of joy streaming down my face.
