What is a Scrotoplasty?

Scrotoplasty creates or reconstructs the scrotum, the pouch of skin that holds the testicles.

For transgender and nonbinary patients, this surgery is often performed during gender-affirming bottom surgery to complete the creation of external genitalia that reflect their gender identity.

The procedure typically utilizes labial or local tissue flaps to create a natural-looking scrotum, which may later accommodate testicular implants if desired.

What to Expect on the Day of Scrotoplasty Surgery

On the day of your surgery, you’ll arrive at Dr. Gallagher’s accredited surgical facility in Miami, where her experienced team will ensure you’re comfortable before the procedure begins.

Scrotoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take several hours, depending on whether it is performed alone or in combination with other procedures, such as phalloplasty or metoidioplasty. Either way, Dr. Gallagher will begin by creating or reshaping the scrotal tissue to achieve a natural, balanced appearance. She will place incisions to minimize visible scarring and preserve sensation as much as possible.

Once complete, the area is dressed with supportive bandages or a compression garment to reduce swelling and protect the area.

Most of our patients can return home the same day, but some may need to stay overnight for monitoring if multiple procedures are performed.

Scrotoplasty Recovery

Your Guide to Post-Tummy Tuck Care

Recovery following scrotoplasty depends on the extent of the surgery and any accompanying procedures. Dr. Gallagher will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including how to clean the surgical area and when to return for follow-up visits.

Patients are encouraged to take approximately two to three weeks off work to focus on their recovery.

Heavy lifting, strenuous activity, and sexual activity should be avoided for about six weeks or until cleared by Dr. Gallagher. However, we advise our patients to begin walking after surgery to promote circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.

    Dr. Gallagher and her team are the absolute best! She completed my brachioplasty on Tuesday and when I saw the initial results at my post op appointment two days later I literally had tears of joy streaming down my face.
