Introduction to Phalloplasty

Dr. Sidhbh Gallagher at Gallagher Plastic Surgery in Miami, FL, does not currently offer urethral lengthening.

In order to create a larger penis, skin and tissue need to be brought in from elsewhere in the body. This usually involves the use of a “flap”. This is called microsurgery.

What is Phalloplasty?

Some patients will opt just to have the penis created and keep their anatomy unchanged so that they are urinating from below.

Dr. Gallagher specializes in non-microsurgical phalloplasty options that use extra tissue from the abdomen or thigh. These procedures can often be performed as an outpatient and are often more affordable than some other techniques.

Phalloplasty is a major surgery and unfortunately comes with some possible complications. If urethral lengthening is not important to you, then Dr. Gallagher may be the right surgeon for you. Depending on the patient’s need, more than one surgery may be required.

The best candidates for phalloplasty are transgender men and nonbinary individuals in the Miami area who desire a larger penis created from their own tissue.

Since Dr. Gallagher does not currently perform urethral lengthening, patients who do not feel this step is essential are excellent candidates for her approach. Those interested should also be prepared for the possibility of additional surgeries to refine the results.

What to Expect on the Day of Phalloplasty Surgery

After anesthesia is administered, tissue will be carefully taken from the donor site (such as the abdomen or thigh) and shaped into a penis. Depending on your goals, additional procedures, such as scrotoplasty, may be performed during the same operation. Once the phallus is created, it will be positioned and secured, and the donor site will be closed with careful attention to healing and appearance.

Some of our Miami-area patients can go home the same day, while others may benefit from an overnight stay, depending on the procedure’s complexity.

Most patients can return to work in about six weeks. Often, a few surgeries are needed depending on the patient’s goals.

Swelling and bruising are common in the first couple of weeks, and you’ll need to take it easy to let your body heal properly. Follow-up visits are an essential part of the process, allowing Dr. Gallagher to monitor your healing and guide you through each stage of recovery.

Depending on the type of phalloplasty performed, additional procedures such as phallus refinement, scrotoplasty, or testicular implants may be staged later.

    Dr. Gallagher and her team are the absolute best! She completed my brachioplasty on Tuesday and when I saw the initial results at my post op appointment two days later I literally had tears of joy streaming down my face.
