What is Keyhole Top Surgery?

This is for patients with small breasts who want to avoid scars. A small (approx. 1 inch) incision is hidden in either nipple, and the breast tissue is removed through this. Liposuction may also be used. If the nipples are large, they may be reduced in projection at the time of surgery, or at a later date, to masculinize them. This surgery doesn’t address the removal of excess skin, so the patient needs a naturally small chest to begin with and relies on the elasticity of the chest skin to shrink. Wearing a binder is extremely important and needs to stay on for six weeks after surgery to help with this.

What to Expect on the Day of Keyhole Top Surgery

You’ll arrive at the surgical center, meet with Dr. Gallagher and the anesthesiology team, and go over the plan one last time before heading into the operating room. Once the surgery is complete, you’ll be placed in a binder to support your chest as it begins to heal.

After a short stay in recovery, you’ll be able to go home the same day with detailed aftercare instructions. Having a trusted friend or family member to drive you and stay with you the first night is strongly recommended so you can focus fully on rest.

Your Guide to Post-Keyhole Top Surgery Care

The patient wears a binder 24/7, or as much as possible, for 6 weeks after surgery. The stitches are all dissolvable. Most patients return to work within one to two weeks, depending on their job requirements.

We inform our patients to expect some bruising and swelling during the first few weeks, and that their chest will continue to settle into its final shape over the following months.

Light walking is encouraged immediately, but heavy lifting and rigorous exercise should be avoided until cleared by Dr. Gallagher, typically around six weeks. You can expect nipple sensation to be reduced in the early stages, but it often improves as healing progresses.

By the three-month mark, most of Dr. Gallager’s patients feel fully back to themselves and confident in enjoying their results, with final outcomes typically visible within a year.

    Dr. Gallagher and her team are the absolute best!
